Acknowledgements

These papers were originally prepared for the Geurin‐Pettus Conference on the 2008 US Presidential Election held at Fort Burgwin in Taos, New Mexico, a campus of Southern Methodist University (SMU‐in‐Taos). We wish to thank the authors for the speed with which they undertook their analyses after their various data sets became available – and their willingness to revise their papers in light of the critical points raised at the conference and subsequently by two excellent and speedy JEPOP reviewers. We also thank the Geurin‐Pettus Program Fund, Deans ad interim Caroline Brettell and Peter Moore of Dedman College, and Dennis S. Ippolito, Eugene McElvaney Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of Political Science, all at Southern Methodist University, for their support of the conference. Chris Carberry masterfully handled conference logistics and assisted with the editing of the articles. Several at SMU‐in‐Taos – Professor Michael Adler, Director ; Cyndy Gimble, Master Fort Keeper; and Carol Baker, Librarian – made our work in Taos all the more enjoyable. Finally, we thank the editors of JEPOP, Justin Fisher and Christopher Wlezien, for giving us the opportunity to bring these papers together, for their efforts in having the papers reviewed, and for their cooperation in seeing the papers through to publication.
