The Symposium on Science in Sailing in Barcelona, 2013, was dedicated to Keld Laumann Pedersen, who with immense commitment and passion introduced Gisela Sjøgaard to the wonderful world of sailing. Without this passion, these two ECSS sailing symposia would never have been launched. The authors are very grateful to Paola Pozzolini, wife of Pierre Sicouri, for her help in the narrative of Pierre's experiences in the Ostar races.
