ABSTRACT

Introduction: Posterior scleritis is a rare form of scleritis that impacts the sclera posterior to the ora serrata. It has a varied clinical presentation making detailed clinical history, thorough examination, and appropriate ancillary testing essential to diagnosis. Our review aims to update the reader on the current literature on posterior scleritis.

Areas covered: A PubMed search was used to identify literature regarding the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and complications of posterior scleritis. Reference lists were checked to identify additional relevant studies.

Expert commentary: Posterior scleritis can be difficult to diagnose given its protean clinical manifestations. Work up is necessary to evaluate for possible systemic disease. Current methods of treatment include non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, corticosteroids, and immunomodulatory therapy. Even with appropriate treatment a portion of patients will experience vision loss.
