The readers of this journal would be interested in knowing that we were established some twenty five years ago as the International Journal of Surface Mining. The inaugural issue was released at the World Mining Congress held in Stockholm in 1987. The journal was quickly accepted by various groups of the mining industry. Although we have had a name change more than once, we stay afloat continually expanding our readership and coverage. Today we are published as International Journal of Mining, Reclamation and Environment. The background to the adoption of this name is in itself interesting.

In 1992 we started another peer reviewed quarterly under the title of International Journal of Environmental Issues in Minerals and Energy Industry (IJEI). This journal did not last long. The subscription base was poor and we could not pay our bills. It was at that point that we decided to incorporate IJEI scope of coverage with the International Journal of Surface Mining. This is how the International Journal of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Environment was born. Later, to broaden the scope of our editorial coverage, we dropped the word “Surface” becoming instead just “Mining.”

Now this journal covers all aspects of mining and environmental technology related to coal, oil sands, industrial minerals and metalliferous deposits. This journal has also actively supported the biennial International Conferences on Environmental Issues and Management of Waste in Energy and Mineral Production (SWEMP). The last SWEMP- the 12th in the series, and organized by the Czech University of Life Sciences (CULS) Prague, Czech Republic was held in 2010.

Incorporated in this issue is a special issue comprising of several papers on Environmental Issues. The title of the special issue is “Environmental Aspects of Mining and Reclamation.” The chief editor of this issue is Prof. Petr Sklenička. He is ably assisted by co-editors Jan Vymazal, Marie Vrbová, Robin Healy, and Emilie Pecharova.

An individual who has tirelessly worked for SWEMP 2010 and this special issue is Dr. Ivana Kašparová from CULS. I am grateful to her for keeping things on track to meet the publication deadlines.

SWEMP 2012 will be held in New Delhi from November 28–30, 2012. A Call for Papers has been issued recently and is available on the website: http://www.mpes-cami-swemp.com/
