We are pleased to announce that Taylor & Francis have decided to establish an annual Best Paper Award for Geomechanics and Geoengineering: An International Journal. The Award carries a cash prize of £250 together with a certificate. An esteemed committee comprising: Professor James K. Mitchell, Dr Brian Simpson, Professor Antonio Gens and Professor H.P. Xie have been appointed to manage the Award selection process. Their recommendation will be submitted to the Editors-in-Chief for final approval. Each year, all papers published in the annual volume of the Journal will be eligible for consideration. In the unusual event when two papers are considered to be of exceptional quality by the committee, then the Award and prize money will be shared.

It is with deep regret and sadness that we advise our readers that one of our founding Honorary Editors, Professor Z.J. Shen, passed away at 6.45 pm, on the 2nd of October 2006 in Beijing, China, at the age of 73. Widely regarded as one of the finest soil mechanics researchers of his generation in China, Professor Shen played a key role in the establishment of Geomechanics and Geoengineering: An International Journal. An obituary will be published in a subsequent issue of this journal.

Editors-in-Chief: Professor Hai-Sui Yu and Professor M. Jamiolkowski
