This issue truly marks the end of an era. Jackie Stedall has stepped down after twelve years as Editor of the BHSM Bulletin: Journal of the British Society for the History of Mathematics. During that time she has single-handedly transformed the former BSHM Newsletter into the journal that it is today. All readers of the Bulletin will be aware of the debt of gratitude that the Society, and the scholarly community, owes to Jackie for her work and dedication to the Bulletin, and nothing that I can say can do justice to her contribution to the history of mathematics through her editorship. It is both a great privilege, and a great responsibility, to succeed Jackie, and her predecessors John Fauvel and Ron Gowing, as editor of BSHM’s primary publication.

Happily, Jackie has agreed to continue to do editorial work for the Bulletin, and the articles in this issue have benefited from her careful attention. So Jackie’s love of our subject, her experience and her high standards of scholarly presentation will continue to serve authors and readers of this journal.

I am particularly grateful to Jackie for the help she has given me in the preparation of this issue. She has answered every question promptly and patiently and has done everything she possibly could to make my assumption of the editorship as straightforward as possible. I am also very grateful to the editorial and production staff at Taylor and Francis, especially James Baldock, Adam Burbage, Helen Gray and Sue Corless, who have coped admirably with a new editor still finding his feet.
