Abstract
In the article ‘Gregory's meridian line of 1673–74: a St Andrew's detective story’ (BSHM Bulletin, 23 (2008), 58–72), John C Amson referred to other important ecclesiastical meridian lines in the Duomo in Florence (1468), the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna (1576), and in Santa Sophia in Constantinople (1437). Naturally a reader wonders why no mention is made of Rome. On a recent trip to Italy I decided to follow Amson's lead by taking a closer look at sites of mathematical interest in Florence and Rome.
