Tackling Murderball: Masculinity, Disability and the Big Screen

Abstract

The sport of wheelchair rugby is the subject of a recent film Murderball, which tells the story of the apparently intense rivalry between the Canadian and United States men's teams. In part, the story is told through the lives of some of the game's leading players and coaches. Murderball deals with a series of ethical and political questions concerned with conceptions of disability, articulations of sporting bodies, and the value attached to sporting performance. In this paper we offer a critique of Murderball and explore a number of themes including: (1) What can disabled bodies do?; (2) This is not the Special Olympics; and (3) ‘Hot’ and disabled. We conclude that these themes offer us new intellectual challenges for thinking about the physical education experiences of young disabled people and progression in disability sport. Indeed, we argue that Murderball moves disability issues into new intellectual terrain, thus increasing the ways in which people who work with young people and sport might need to take account of disability.

El deporte de rugby sobre silla de ruedas es el tema de un film reciente, Murderball, que cuenta la historia de la aparentemente intensa rivalidad entre los equipos masculinos de Canada y de los Estados Unidos. En parte la historia se cuenta por medio de las vidas de algunos de los principales jugadores y entrenadores. Murderball maneja una serie de preguntas éticas y políticas centradas sobre las concepciones de la discapacidad, las articulaciones de los cuerpos deportivos y el valor atribuído a la actuación deportiva. En este artículo ofrecemos una crítica de Murderball, y exploramos un número de temas, incluyendo: (1) ¿Qué son capaces de hacer los cuerpos discapacitados? (2) Esto no son los Special Olympics (Programas físicos para disminuídos psíquicos), y (3) “tios buenos” y discapacitados. Concluímos que estos temas nos ofrecen desafíos intelectuales nuevos para pensar acerca de las experiencias educativas físicas de la gente joven disminuída y la progresión de la minusvalía en el deporte. De hecho, argumentamos que Murderball lleva los asuntos sobre la discapacidad a un terreno intelectual nuevo, y de esta manera multiplica las maneras en las que la gente que trabaja con gente joven y el deporte podría tomar en cuenta a la discapacidad.

Rollstuhl-Rugby war kürzlich Gegenstand des Filmes Murderball. Hier wird die Geschichte der offenen Rivalität zwischen dem kanadischen und dem US-amerikanischen Herrenteam erzählt. Zum Teil wird die Geschichte aus der Perspektive einiger Schlüssel-Spieler und der Trainer dargestellt. Murderball behandelt eine Reihe ethischer und politischer Fragen, die sich mit Vorstellungen von Behinderung, athletischen Körpern sowie dem Wert der sportlichen Leistung auseinandersetzen. Dieser Aufsatz beinhaltet eine Besprechung von Murderball, in der unter anderem folgende Themen zur Sprache kommen: (1) Wozu ist ein behinderter Körper in der Lage? (2) Das sind nicht die Special Olympics und (3) ‘Heiß’ und behindert. Wir nehmen an, dass uns diese Themen neue Anstöße zum Nachdenken über die Erfahrungen von jungen Behinderten im Sportunterricht und zur Entwicklung des Behindertensports eröffnen. Wir behaupten in der Tat, dass Murderball Behindertenfragen auf ein neues intellektuelles Terrain führt, daher sollten Menschen, die mit jungen Leuten im Sport arbeiten, vermehrt das Thema Behinderung zur Kenntnis nehmen.
