The Malaysian International Tribology Conference 2015 (MITC2015) was held in Penang, Malaysia during 16–17 November 2015. MITC2015 was attended by more than 200 participants from different continents: Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa and America. All extended abstracts presented at the MITC2015 are open access and can be downloaded via http://mytribos.org/proceedings/mitc2015. The presentation was divided into seven different topics, including Bearing Design and Technology; Biotribology; Contact Mechanics; Friction and Wear; Fuels, Lubricants and Lubrication; Green Tribology; Surface, Coatings and Interfaces.

Energy is a vital supply for social and economic development. Moreover, tribology would not only be good in terms of cost-saving aspect in the short run but also helps to sustain the natural resources and environment by reducing the energy consumption. Thus, this special issue was created to communicate to colleagues in Industry and Academe recent advances and challenges in tribology for sustainable development. It contains a selection of important and impactful studies about the methods, analysis, design advances and new materials that contribute to the improvement in the performance of machine components and systems.

Excellent works presented at the MITC2015 were recommended for submission to Tribology – Materials, Surfaces & Interfaces and 6 papers were accepted and published in this special issue.

As a guest editor, I hope that the papers in this special issue will serve as a valuable reference for researchers and tribologists around the globe. I am also grateful to the Editors, the Reviewers and the Publication coordinators, who worked very hard in reviewing papers and providing feedback for authors.

Finally, I thank the hosting organisation, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Malaysian Tribology Society (MYTRIBOS), organising committees, generous sponsors and industrial partners, who supported us in our scholastic endeavours and inspires us to greater heights of achievements.
