Classroom Confrontations

Racism in South Africa and the United States

Pages 1-13 | Published online: 08 May 2007

Abstract

The role of racism is a salient feature in the socio-historical development of both South Africa and the United States. It is, therefore, understandable that academics and students are drawn, even compelled, to compare the manner in which race is lived in these two nation-states. This essay describes some of the discussion and learning that accompanies teaching an upper-division university course that includes an analytical comparison of race and racism between South Africa and the United States.
