The ‘Fourth’ engine: Austhorpe, 1714?

 

Abstract

Elsecar proudly maintains the last atmospheric engine in Yorkshire. This paper presents a cameo of the first, reputedly built by John Calley around 1714, examining the available evidence and attempting a historical reconstruction.
