ABSTRACT

In the present study, the physical characteristics of jatropha methyl ester (JME) and tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO) have been evaluated. TPO possess high calorific value and a low cetane number, while JME has a high cetane number and average calorific value, as compared to diesel. So, blends of JME and TPO have been made and mixed with cerium oxide nanomaterial for controlling harmful emissions. Experimental analysis was carried out in a diesel engine with JMETPOCeO2 blends and it was found that JME80TPO20CeO2 (JME 80% and TPO 20% by volume mixed with 1 ppm of CeO2 nanomaterial) blend has a thermal efficiency of 24.25%, which is quite comparable with that of diesel. Also, an appreciable decrement in carbon monoxide emission, of 43.11% with respect to diesel, was found.
