Combustion and exhaust emissions of a direct-injection diesel engine burning jojoba ethyl ester and mixtures with ethanol

ABSTRACT

An experiment was carried out to investigate the performance and exhaust emissions of a diesel engine using jojoba ethyl ester (JEE), and its blends with ethanol in different ratios of 5, 10, 15 and 20% ethanol (denoted by E5, E10, E15 and E20). Engine performance and exhaust emission of five different fuels in a single-cylinder, naturally aspirated, direct-injection diesel engine were compared with those of diesel fuel at different engine speeds from 1000 to 2000 rpm. The engine performance (power, torque, specific fuel consumption, and thermal efficiency) and exhaust emissions (CO2, CO, NOx, and SO2) were measured and are presented here. Details of the effects of the fuels on the combustion and exhaust emissions are discussed in the present work. JEE and its blends with ethanol are considered good biofuels, which can be used in diesel engines, with minimum modifications needed to the engine; however, efforts are still needed to reduce the viscosity of JEE.
