Abstract

Ricinus communis seed extract was studied as a corrosion inhibitor for copper in neem oil-based biodiesel. Inhibition efficiency and corrosion rate were studied at different acid values and temperatures. The inhibition efficiency was found to be above 95% for copper in neem oil-based biodiesel. The negative values obtained for free energy of adsorption and heat of adsorption show the spontaneity of adsorption of inhibitors on the metal surface. Infrared spectral studies were shown to identify the functional groups responsible for corrosion inhibition. The surface morphology of copper metal was studied by scanning electron microscopy. All the results obtained were promising and, hence, a new alternative, eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for copper corrosion in biodiesel is revealed.
