Abstract

The goal of the present research was to screen the best growth media for Chlorella vulgaris and investigate their effects on growth parameters like biomass yield, lipid, carbohydrate, protein, chlorophyll, and carotenoids production. Four different growth media were selected: bold basal medium (BBM), BG-11, M-8, and Modified BG-11 for the present study. In BBM, the maximum protein and lipid concentrations were 0.0352 mg ml−1 and 14.646% dcw, respectively, were obtained. In comparison to other selected growth media, BG-11 had the highest biomass productivity (1.148 g L−1), carbohydrate (0.059 mg ml−1), chlorophyll (13.233 µg ml−1) and carotenoid (1.228 mg L−1) content. Due to its biochemical properties, Chlorella vulgaris is used in various applications and has several practical uses like biofuel production, pharmaceutical etc. When microalgae are grown in different growth media, its metabolism changes as per the components of growth media. This study shows the effect of growth media on C. vulgaris growth in terms of biomass production and lipid production.
