Using natural analogues in assessing long term effects of nuclear waste disposal in clays

A case study

ABSTRACT

Long-term effects of heating on the clay barrier of a nuclear waste repository include mineralogical changes. They are studied by using field data obtained from a natural analogue where a clay deposit was affected by an intrusion of hot lava. Differences in mineralogical composition between the zone of the thermal analogy and the far field are used to evaluate strength and apparent preconsolidation change employing thermo-chemo-plasticity model.

RÉSUMÉ

Les effets à long terme d'échauffement des barrières argileuses de déchets nucléaires incluent des changements minéralogiques. On les étudie ici en utilisant les données de site d'un analogue naturel dans lequel un dépôt d'argile a été soumis à une intrusion de lave chaude. Les différences en composition entre la zone de l'analogie et le champ lointain sont utilisées pour évaluer les changements de la résistance et la préconsolidation apparente en employant le modèle thermo-chimio-plastique.
