ABSTRACT

Borehole and wellbore stability is a fundamental issue for natural resources production (hydrocarbons, water) as well as for subsurface storage and for scientific boreholes. This issue involves the in situ state of stress (often poorly known), rock mechanics behaviour, and drilling procedures. Many coupled physical mechanisms play a role: in situ stresses and pressures, variations in pore pressures and temperatures, and non-equilibrated physico-chemical processes arising in sensitive (swelling) shales. Useful results given by simple analysis tools are reviewed, along with case histories where mechanisms are considered and successful remedies proposed and implemented.

RÉSUMÉ

La stabilité des forages et des puits est capitale pour l'exploitation des réserves souterraines, hydrocarbures, eaux, mais aussi pour les stockages et les forages de recherche scientifique. Elle met en jeu le chargement in situ initial, souvent mal connu, le comportement des roches et les méthodes de forage. De nombreux mécanismes physiques le plus souvent couplés, interviennent dus aux redistributions de contraintes, pression, température, et dans les argiles, à des déséquilibres physico-chimiques. On rappelle ici des résultats donnés par des outils théoriques simples, les remèdes proposés et testés sur des cas de terrains.
