Imported Leprosy In Belgium 1960-1974

Summary

17 new and one relapse case of leprosy were diagnosed in Belgium between 1960 and 1974, all were imported cases, 9 lepromatous and 8 tuberculoid.

A survey is presented concerning the origin of the infections, their diagnosis, evolution and therapy, and the changes the latter underwent during the years. As in most non-endemic regions no secondary infections are known in our country.

Résumé

Entre 1960 et 1974, 17 nouveaux cas de lèpre et une récidive ont été diagnostiqués en Belgique. Il y eut 9 cas lépromateux et 8 tuberculoides.

Un aperçu est présenté concernant leur origine, diagnostic, évolution et thérapeutique, ainsi que les changements survenus dans cette dernière au cours du temps.

Comme dans la majorité des régions non endémiques, aucun cas d’infection secondaire ne fut noté.

Samenvatting

Tussen 1960 en 1974 werden in België 17 nieuwe en één recidiefgeval van lepra gediagnosticeerd. Er waren 9 lepromateuse en 8 tuberculoiïde vormen.

Een overzicht wordt gegeven van de oorsprong, de diagnose, het verloop en de behandeling. Deze laatste onderging in de laatste tijd belangrijke wijzigingen.

Zoals in de meeste andere niet-endemische landen werden ook in België geen secundaire besmettingen waargenomen.
