Exploring Neutron-Star Matter Using RI Beam

Pages 337-338 | Received 04 Oct 2001, Accepted 04 Feb 2002, Published online: 07 Feb 2012

Abstract

The present knowledge of neutron rich matter is not sufficient to describe observed phenomena of neutron stars, which consist of extremely neutron rich matter. Unfortunately, the most basic information of the matter, the equation of state (EOS) of proton-neutron asymmetric nuclear matter, has not been known sufficiently so far because there has been almost no way to produce nuclei with large neutron richness (NZ). Thanks to the recent development of RI beam facilities, it is now possible to study properties of neutron rich nuclei in a laboratory. This study is an attempt to obtain the EOS of asymmetric nuclear matter, from masses and radii of neutron-rich nuclei using an RI beam. It is suggested that systematic measurements of nuclear radii and masses should be performed for isotopes with proton abundance Z/A≤0.35.
