Influence of Technology Responsiveness and Distance to Market on Capacity Building

ABSTRACT

It is not clear so far how distance from a market affects producer capacity building and their responsiveness to new technology. Distance from a market and technology responsiveness, which influence capacity building of producers, were studied between January and April 2007, collecting data in regions of Bangladesh having similar geographic and climatic characteristics and suitable for vegetable production. The cropping patterns in the study areas were similar. Analysis indicated that producers who were most responsive to modern production technologies were better at building capacity than less responsive producers. Producers who were located near a wholesale market were better at building capacity than producers who were located further away. Producers that respond in a positive way to technology also are more likely to build capacity.
