Se Vende Hielo and Bracero Brothers

Abstract

My relief print, Se Vende Hielo (We Sell Ice), approaches the complexities of the border . . . In the print the young man is handcuffed and being arrested. I was thinking that more than just an individual, he represents a whole culture being arrested.

Juan Fuentes

JUAN FUENTES is an acclaimed artist living in San Francisco. Juan was introduced to art on the farms of California’s Central Valley. As a young child, Juan, whose parents were born in the United States, worked with his family in the fields. Watching a Bracero farmworker carve life out of a piece of wood inspired his lifelong interest and passion for creating prize-winning art. By representing what in recent years has become the issue of our times, in 2013, Juan Fuentes illustrates the complexity of our relationship to immigration on our southern border. America’s history of building wealth from the labor of slave and low-wage workers, who are both exploited and discriminated against, is endemic. Correspondence: [email protected].
