Being Black and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender

Pages 183-195 | Published online: 11 Apr 2013

Abstract

This article explores how the experience of being both black and either lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) has evolved over time, particularly through the lens of the New York City experience; how the interaction of black LGBT persons with the black community, the white LGBT communities, and the larger society has affected that evolution; and the current crossroad where black LGBT persons and the black community stand today.
