Treatment in transition: The rapidly evolving landscape of transgender and gender non-binary care

Abstract

This article summarizes the proceedings of a symposium co-sponsored by the American Psychiatric Association and the Association of Lesbian and Gay Psychiatrists. This presentation was delivered to an audience of mental health providers at the 2018 IPS: the Mental Health Services Conference in Chicago, IL. Its content covered a range of topics regarding current standards of care for transgender and gender non-binary populations in the United States. It featured speakers Matthew Dominguez, MD, MPH, who recently completed the first transgender psychiatry fellowship at Mount Sinai in New York City; Angela Shrestha MD, a psychiatrist practicing in Chicago, IL who specializes in women’s mental health and has experience with incarcerated transgender and gender non-binary populations; Amir Ahuja, MD, Director of Psychiatry at the Los Angeles LGBT Center; and discussant Kenneth Ashley, MD who is the Director of Mental Health Services for the Peter Krueger Clinic, which serves the LGBTQ + populations of New York City.
