The Role of Diabetes in Predicting Employment Status for Individuals with Bipolar Disorder

Abstract

Diabetes is a growing public health concern for the general population, but individuals with bipolar disorder (BPD) are at increased risk. There is a dearth of research investigating how diabetes affects outcomes for those with BPD. Using data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey, this study investigates the relationship between diabetes and employment for individuals with BPD (N = 748). Logistic regression results indicated among individuals with BPD, the odds of being unemployed were approximately 3.5 times higher for those with diabetes compared to those without diabetes. Relevant policy considerations and implications for professionals are discussed.
