Readability, basal readers, and story grammar: What lies beneath the surface?

Pages 40-47 | Published online: 28 Jan 2010

Abstract

A line of research is briefly reviewed in which the readability of basal reader stories is assessed through a comparison of traditional and story grammar‐based indices. Basal reader stories intended for grades two through five were analyzed as well as the results of students’ recall as a function of the underlying complexity of stories. Implications for the measurement of readability and the preparation of basal reader stories are presented.
