Welcome to the sixth and final issue of 2016. With this issue we have successfully completed our eighth year in publication and wish to thank all of our authors, reviewers, guest editors, board members and administrators. As per our normal practice, we have formally acknowledged those who have been active on our behalf during this year at the end of this issue of IJSE.

This has been our first year of publication with six issues, which has enabled us to publish a Special Issue (SI) on ‘Design for Sustainable Behaviour’. We look forward to organizing further special issues, and encourage those who wish to act as our guest editors to forward their proposal for a SI to us. Furthermore, based on the advice of our Editorial Board Members and due to operational challenges outlined in the IJSE editorial of 8(1), we have been actively involved in focusing the scope of our publications, and have redirected a number of the submissions to other more relevant journals published by Taylor and Francis such as International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability, International Journal of Sustainable Building Technology and Urban Development and Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

In our final issue of the year we are presenting six papers ranging from publications on dual fuel engines and supply chain performance index, to environmental evaluation of wind turbines.

In the first of three papers on dual fuels, Banapurmath et al. examine the performance, combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of a single cylinder, four stroke, direct injection, stationary diesel engine operated on HOME and HCNG in a dual fuel mode. The second paper by Nayak et al. aims to experimentally optimize a twin cylinder dual fuel diesel engine using woody biomass. This is followed by a paper by Yaliwal et al. that presents the experimental results of the effect of bioethanol and thermal barrier coating on the performance of a dual fuel engine operating on HOME and producer gas induction.

Recognizing the importance of integrating key sustainability indicators, we next present a paper by Gopal and Thakkar that makes use of both qualitative and quantitative approaches for the development of a composite sustainable performance index for automobile supply chains. With further applications to the automotive sector, Garcia et al. examine environmental evaluation of innovative subsystems to generate learning dynamics that will simplify design.

Finally, Chowdhury et al. review current research to describe methods to improve the fault ride through capability of Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIG) wind turbines and analyse the impact of the DFIG wind farm on transient stability of power systems.

As we look to the future for IJSE, we shall be moving forward with a change in the Editorial Team. Dr Leila Sheldrick is commencing a new demanding academic position and her duties will be taken over by Mrs Hana Trollman. Over the past two years Dr Sheldrick has made significant contributions to both research and teaching in the area of Sustainable Design. Leila has shown a tremendous commitment to support IJSE during a very challenging period of growth. The editorial team would like to express their sincerest gratitude for all of her hard work and devotion and we look forward to her continued contribution and support as one of IJSE Editorial Board Members.

In her place, we are pleased to welcome Mrs Hana Trollman as the new Managing Editor of the journal. Through her previous experience in publishing and her academic background in applied sciences, Hana brings invaluable publishing knowledge and a commitment for continual improvement to this post.
