In this fifth issue of 2018, we have published papers on a variety of subjects which include product service systems (PSS), packaging design, paper recycling, improve organisational well-being and use of ICT to support sustainable design.

In the first paper, Woolley et al. address the concerns over the rapid increase in consumer food waste (CFW) and outline a five-stage PSS to better integrate food production and consumption. In the second paper, Georgakoudis et al. discuss the benefits of redesigning traditional paper corrugated packaging including weight and transportation benefits, better environmental performance and protection for the packaged products as well as cost savings for various supply chain actors. They also present a tool to support packaging redesign.

The next paper in this issues by Reiman and Väyrynen, explore the organisational well-being, and provide new insights and research challenges into the concept of balanced organisation theory by including a sustainability aspect and by proposing a new concept of ‘balanced value networks’. In the fourth paper, Arabi et al. propose a new approach to determine the optimal warranty period and the out-of-warranty replacement period from the point of view of the producer and the customer, and utilise a game theory model to minimise the total cost of usage and end-of-life management of products.

In next paper, Azizi et al. utilise the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) for selecting appropriate solutions to efficiently and productively reduce environmental pollution and water, energy and raw material consumption in a recycled paper manufacturing facilities. In the sixth and final paper in this issue, Manjunatheshwara and Vinodh highlights the influential factors in the sustainable design of tablet devices and, using total interpretive structural modelling (TISM) methodology outline the dependencies among these factors.
