Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the No. 1 cause of death in both men and women in the United States. Risk factors for CAD are now well recognized, and modification of these factors can prevent heart attacks and prolong life. Therefore, prevention of heart disease should be a major goal of all primary care physicians. To further that goal, Dr Sorrentino outlines a rational approach to risk assessment and treatment based on the data from primary prevention studies.
