The merit of lowering total cholesterol levels has been recognized for some years now, but the role of increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) values in patients at risk for cardiac disease has not received much attention. In this article, Drs Safeer and Cornell review information about HDL’s role as a risk factor and discuss what might be done to raise HDL and protect patients from increased risk of coronary artery disease.
