Discrete modelling of granular materials and geotechnical problems

Pages 951-965 | Published online: 04 Oct 2011

ABSTRACT

Distinct Element (DEM) simulations are more and more used to solve selected real problems involving granular materials, both in the geotechnical engineering and chemical engineering fields. This approach involves a series of difficulties, which are related to the definition of the model itself and to the calibration of its micromechanical parameters. In this paper, the main features involved with DEM modelling of granular materials are reviewed, and a simple modelling approach is proposed. Under the light of existing literature, a series of modelling guidelines are given and the performance of the proposed approach tested by simulating the mechanical behaviour of sand.
