Multiphysics aspects of seismic slip

ABSTRACT

The physical processes which occur during an earthquake exhibit several coupled phenomena as large variations of stress, pore pressure and temperature take place in the slip zone. Thermo-poro-mechanical couplings due to shear heating can be associated to phase transition such as vaporization of the pore fluid, melting of fault gouge and to chemical effects such as dehydration of minerals. Different competing effects may influence dynamic slip and affect the weakening of the shear stress.

RÉSUMÉ

Les processus physiques mis en jeu durant un séisme peuvent faire apparaître plusieurs phénomènes couplés car de grandes variations de contrainte, de pression interstitielle et de température prennent place dans la zone de glissement. Ces couplages thermo-hydro-mécaniques dus à la dissipation de l'énergie de frottement en chaleur peuvent être associés à des transitions de phases telles que la vaporisation du fluide interstitiel, la fusion de la gouge de faille et à des effets chimiques tels que la décomposition thermique des minéraux. Différents effets peuvent entrer en concurrence pour influencer le glissement dynamique et le radoucissement de la contrainte de cisaillement.
