Responding to students' mental health needs: Impermeable systems and diverse users

Abstract

Mental health problems in the student population have given rise to increasing public concern. This article explores recent changes in the characteristics and experience of the student population and identifies some factors that may increase students' vulnerablility to mental health problems. The findings of a research study that examined the experiences of university staff in supporting students with mental health problems are presented and their use of support services both within and outside the university is discussed. Patterns of communication between the higher education institution and community mental health services are considered in relation to the way in which the student role and the student's relationship to the institution is conceptualised.
