Notes on contributors

Tom Northey

Tom Northey leads the Graphic Design course and the Illustration courses at UCA Farnham. Tom is a graduate of one of our founder colleges – the Surrey Institute of Art & Design. During his time in the design industry he has worked with many household names. His research explores the notion of what it means to be a designer in the twenty-first century. He uses the systematic approach of parametric design as a means of approaching each project. That is to say that what he produces is not defined as art, design, sculpture, music or performance, but all of these things. This rich melting pot has freed his constraints for making work. As such, it predominantly focuses on removing the designer from the creative process by setting up systems to determine the outcome, whether audio or visual. The working methodology Tom has devised parameters that allow him to control particular aspects such as proportion, scale, speed and orientation, yet enable him to produce masses of permutations on a theme. The use of a Parametric System allows him to regulate the output of form in a considered and accurate way while giving a set of fixed “goals.”
