The “belliphonic” ear: listening to sound and music in wartime Iraq and Afghanistan

Listening to war: sound, music, trauma, and survival in wartime Iraq, by J. Martin Daughtry / My music, my war: the listening habits of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, by Lisa Gilman / Sound targets: American soldiers and music in the Iraq war, by Jonathan Pieslak

Notes

1. Kyle Gann composed a piece in 2008 to Smedley’s 1933 lecture “War Is Just a Racket”.

2. Goodman’s text is more a theoretical reflection on the politics of vibration than a history or ethnography of sound in combat.

3. At this point in the music publishing industry, the question of the companion website remains open, as a result of the problems illustrated by Pieslak’s example.
