Martyn D. Smith

Martyn D. Smith is Lecturer in Japanese Studies at the University of Sheffield, UK. A historian of modern and contemporary Japan, his long-standing research interests cover nationalism, national identity, consumerism, and mass media in Japan. He is a founding member of the Asian Sound Culture Studies and Modernity project and author of Mass Media Consumerism and National Identity in Postwar Japan (Bloomsbury, 2018), ‘Sound hunting in post-war Japan: recording technology, aurality, mobility and consumerism (Sound Studies, 2021) and “The hell of modern sound: a history of urban noise in modern Japan” in Asian Sound Cultures: Voice, Noise, Sound, Technology (Routledge, 2022).
