Competence: A Transformative Approach

Pages 7-11 | Published online: 12 Apr 2016

Abstract

The South African journey towards transformation and the reasons why it was necessary suggest that vigilance about professional competence needs to be continuous. Educators have a responsibility to prepare graduates to meet practice challenges on a variety of fronts within the world arena, where constant change in expectations and demands is ensured. An ongoing attempt to prepare students to meet the professional competence standards and also enable them to become change agents, both personally and in a public context, is illustrated with reference to the undergraduate programme at the University of Cape Town.
