The Professional Competence Context in New Zealand

Abstract

Legislation will soon be introduced in New Zealand to ensure that all health professionals, including occupational therapists, have the skills and knowledge they need to practise competently. This article describes the governmental and professional structures that help occupational therapists to maintain their professional competence throughout their professional life. In particular, it addresses the cultural competencies required to work with Maori (the indigenous people of New Zealand), and how these competencies are addressed in legislation and within the registration Board's Competencies for Registration as an Occupational Therapist. In addition, the role played by the New Zealand Association of Occupational Therapists is outlined and the joint responsibilities of employers and individual therapists are identified.
