Abstract
It is now around 30 years since the role of the entrepreneur was a fashionable theme in economic history and the time may be right to bring once more to the attention of economic historians and persons interested in economic history the achievements of some of the leading participants in the industrial revolution. In this introduction we shall look briefly at the changing developments in economic history and economics, at some definitions of the entrepreneur, and then turn our attention to the evidence provided in the chapters that follow.
