Pages 67-77 | Received 20 Jun 2011, Accepted 16 Sep 2011, Published online: 25 Jul 2012

Abstract

In this interview, artist Nandipha Mntambo talks about how she manipulates cowhides into sculptural installations by firstly moulding them to her body. She explains how her depiction and representation of self, comes out of a struggle with boundaries and labels. We also explore the appropriation of her as an artist into the canon of Contemporary African Art.

Notes

1. Jane Alexander was born in Johannesburg and studied at Witwatersrand University. Her mainly figurative sculptural works comment on socio-political issues. She is a member of the teaching staff at Michaelis School of Fine Arts, University of Cape Town.

2. Brett Murray was born in Pretoria, South Africa and studied Fine Art at the University of Cape Town. Murray's works, often subversive and bitterly funny, explore the relationship between pre and post-apartheid South Africa.
