Can Diabetes Mellitus Result from an Infectious Disease?

Pages 124-130 | Published online: 17 May 2016

Abstract

The possibility that under certain circumstances viral infections may be diabetogenic is once again a live issue. Investigators have induced a diabetes-like condition in animals, and interstitial, cell-mediated pancreatitis has been shown to be a consistent finding in congenital rubella. The ensuing diabetes appears to result from necrobiosis and/or mitotic inhibition of the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans.
