Acute Necrotizing Enterocolitis: Recognition and Management

Pages 129-135 | Published online: 17 May 2016

Abstract

Preliminary clinical results suggest that an innovative treatment protocol, put into action at the earliest sign of gastrointestinal distress or distension in high-risk infants, may substantially improve the prognosis in this otherwise highly lethal disease. Experimental data suggest, too, that breast feeding, by compensating for their immunologic immaturity, can provide significant protection to such neonates.
