Hormone-Receptor Interactions and the Plasma Membrane

Pages 73-80 | Published online: 17 May 2016

Abstract

The diverse anabolic effects of insulin, the prototype hormone in this discussion, have as their starting point the hormone's rather loose binding to an apparently mobile and quite numerous receptor on the exterior of the plasma membrane; activation of the receptor then sets in motion a series of intracellular events. Experiments are described through which the receptor was localized and its molecular properties determined.
