The Role of Altered Vascular Reactivity in Hypertension

Pages 107-116 | Published online: 17 May 2016

Abstract

Hypertensive subjects respond to given pressor stimuli with greater pressure rises than the normotensive. Does this exaggerated reactivity reflect a lower threshold of excitability or a difference in the force-generating contractile response of the vascular smooth muscle? Extensive animal experiments have not yet provided definitive answers but an intrinsic change in excitability is strongly supported.
