The Biogenesis of Organelles

Pages 75-88 | Published online: 06 Jul 2016

Abstract

How are intracellular structures formed, maintained, replaced? These processes, at the very heart of life, appear to be governed by the principle of self-assembly, namely, that the macromolecules of which organelles are composed contain within themselves the “information” that leads to their association and interaction with one another. The author describes numerous experiments that help demonstrate the truth of this principle.
