Abstract

In addition to Roentgen's discovery of x-rays, the history of nuclear medicine is studded with many beautiful demonstrations of serendipity, beginning, perhaps, with the failure of the sun to shine through Becquerel's window. But central also to its development was the conscious integration by many scientists of advances in many fields: atomic physics, physiology, engineering, endocrinology, pharmacology, and others.
