New Concepts of Chronic Pain and Their Implications

Pages 113-123 | Published online: 06 Jul 2016

Abstract

When chronic pain fails to respond to therapy, the approach often has been based on outmoded concepts of the nature of pain. The current unified pain theory takes into account recent biochemical advances and can serve as a basis for more effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Various treatment modalities are reviewed in the context of the psychology as well as the physiology of severe intractable pain.
