Motivations to walk Jeju “Ollegil”, South Korea: development and validation of a walking motivation scale

, &

ABSTRACT

The authors develop a scale to identify the factors that affect participation in a walking tour. The scale-development process consists of a literature review and personal interviews, followed by data collection through a survey of selected visitors to Jeju “Ollegil”, which is a well-known walking-tour destination in South Korea. These procedures yield a four-factor scale with acceptable levels of reliability and validity. Four underlying dimensions of participation in a walking tour are: (1) self-mind arrangement, as thinking about their surroundings on; (2) the desire for novelty, such as preferring to seek new environments; (3) the desire for achievement, such as completing a goal; and (4) a tendency toward self-introspection, that is, examining one's own thoughts or personal values.
