Notes
1. hitchBOT came into being as a complex social experiment in 2013. Its objectives were to learn about how humans perceive a future that promises greater interaction with robotic devices and artificial intelligence (AI). The intention behind this automaton was to see how car drivers would react to a ‘child-like’ character with programmed interactive speech algorithms who travelled by thumbing lifts. In being an applied project outside of laboratory conditions, it became a newsworthy social media darling that captured the public imagination (see Smith and Zeller Citation2017).
