Gordon M. Burghardt is an ethologist and comparative psychologist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, whose research has focused on behavioral development, especially in reptiles, but also on bears and other animals. For over 40 years he has studied play behavior and much of his work, and philosophy of life and science, are represented in his book The genesis of animal play: Testing the limits (MIT Press, 2005).
