1. “Skopje 2014” is a government project, sponsored by the ruling conservative-nationalist party VMRO-DPMNE, of erecting historical monuments and baroque buildings in the centre of the capital Skopje in order to “re-invent” the identity of ethnic Macedonians to be more in line with ancient past. The project is the main element in the government's “policies of antiquization” which international organisations and foreign media label as “state-sponsored nationalism”. The project was announced in 2009 and started to be implemented in 2010/2011.
